Matter whose properties are uniform throughout is homogenous substance. Matter whose properties aee not uniform is heterogenous substance.Pure substance, such as gold, appear homogenous. It’s properties are consistent throughout the sample, and their physical and chemical properties are constant. Pure substance canbe either an element or a compound. An element is a substance that cannot be broken down any further by chemical reaction.

Examples of elements are carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen. Elements combine to fomr compounds. A compound is a substance that can be broken down into elements by chemical reaction. Examples of compounds formed from the element carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen are sugra and alcohol.

Chemical energy is the energy associated with chemical reactions. A chemical reaction changes one kind of matter into another. When gasoline burns in an automobile or wood burns in a a bonfire, it releases chemical energy. The energy supplied to our bodies by food is chemical energy.
